Over Forty Candidates Apply for Iraq's Presidential Race
Key figures in the race include Fuad Hussein, put forward by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and Nizar Amedi representing the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Safwan al-Gargari, secretary-general of Iraq's parliament, told Iraqi media.
Al-Gargari said the final candidate list will emerge after the screening process is complete.
Though Iraq's constitutional framework technically permits any eligible citizen to pursue the presidency, the country's highest offices are effectively distributed via an ethno-sectarian power-sharing formula. This arrangement, instituted following the 2003 U.S.-led military intervention, designates the presidential post for a Kurdish representative, assigns the speaker role to a Sunni Muslim lawmaker, and allocates the premier position to a Shiite Muslim politician.
The presidential selection process advances after Iraq's legislative body successfully chose its parliamentary leadership during sessions conducted on December 29 and 30, 2025.
Constitutional provisions require parliament to select a president within a 30-day window from its inaugural session. The chosen president must then name the candidate from the chamber's largest bloc to assemble a government within 15 days, with that cabinet requiring parliamentary approval through a confidence vote within an additional 30 days.
